Euro1080 chooses MPEG4 to be its new transmission standard






02.11.2004 • Euro1080, the first European High Definition Television station, has chosen for the MPEG4 standard. MPEG4 will be applied from upon the end of April ’05. Meanwhile, Euro1080 will still use MPEG2 until the end of 2005.

With this choice, Euro1080 commits itself in playing a pioneering and even market determining role in the evolution of HDTV throughout Europe. Euro1080 is furthermore proud to announce that its conditional access card for the reception of its HD1 channel is already compatible for MPEG4.

Euro1080 is gathering a number of partners (CE manufacturers, cable operators and distribution groups) that want to put a grouped order of 50.000 set top boxes, spread over the period May 2005 to November 2005. Therefore a tender is opened to look for potential manufacturers’ technical and delivery possibilities and their respective prices.

Meanwhile, Euro1080 also announces the launch of “HD2” in April ‘05. HD2 will be a Premium Content Channel, whereby viewers will pay per event. Euro1080 is now looking into the possibilities of special events, sport games, exclusive concerts and so on to be put on its HD2 channel.
