Six Belgian artists present their Art Bollarts for the Shanghai World Expo

Christine Conix: “The Art Bollart Symbolises the Hospitality and Prosperity of our City” Antwerp (Belgium), 28 April 2010 – Six renowned Belgian artists have applied their own artistic visions to the stylistic beauty of the Antwerp mooring posts. Earlier this month, designer Nedda, avant-garde artist Dr. Hugo Heyrman, ceramic artist Piet Stockmans and best-selling author Marc Pairon presented their Art Bollart versions. The series is now completed with the Art Bollarts designed by architect Christine Conix and artist-designer Patrick Villas. The six Art Bollarts were selected for the Belgian EU Pavilion at the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai. The pavilion itself was also designed by Christine Conix. Urban clusters The Antwerp mooring posts are a familiar sight to Christine Conix. From her office in the Cockerillkaai in Antwerp, the architect has a nice view of the quays of the port. Analogous to her design for the pavilion, her Art Bollart has the dimension of urban clusters: a set of cooperating elements---buildings and streets close together---which form the main part of the affinity between the city and its inhabitants. Conix’s Art Bollart refers to, among other things, the great diversity and density of cities. It welcomes all cultures and nationalities, and is specific to her own country's hospitality. Christine Conix states: "The geometric patterns on my version of the Art Bollart consist of five modules and a special module which makes a symbolic connection between Belgium/Brussels and China/Shanghai. Moreover, the geometric patterns symbolise the windows from which the light of the spirit emerges from Antwerp's inhabitants". The architect, who also was responsible for the design of the Belgian EU Pavilion, adds: "I am extremely pleased that I am working on this project with artists from different disciplines, and that this art project was selected for the Expo in Shanghai. The six Art Bollarts will be placed as sitting and resting objects at the entrance to the Belgian EU Pavilion, where about 5000 people per hour will walk by." Mooring post graffiti Antwerp artist-designer Patrick Villas designed the sixth Art Bollart for the Expo in Shanghai. It was he who 'rediscovered' the Antwerp mooring posts four years ago: "I saw that over the centuries many bollards have been covered with various messages; graffiti expressing the pleasures and annoyances of Antwerp's citizens and people visiting the city on the Scheldt River. With my version of the Art Bollart, I am inviting the spectator to add a personal message. I have already put the first name tag and picture on the Bollart. " He adds: "The Bollart is a chair of which the functional beauty is a homage to the stylistic beauty of the Antwerp mooring posts, the ultimate breviary icon of the social, economic and touristic welcome. The Bollart does not represent any bigotry, but stands for progress without any taboos: mutual respect, freedom of expression, and the colours of the multicultural society." 6 Artists, 6 Art Bollarts The name Bollart refers to the addition of an extra dimension to the original design of the Antwerp bollard. Christine and Patrick Conix Villas are the last of six artists who have designed an art version of the Bollart. Over the past weeks, Bollarts by top designer Nedda, Dr. Hugo Heyrman, best-selling author Marc Pairon and Piet Stockmans have been unveiled. Nedda put a black temperature-sensitive coating on her version of the Art Bollart, thus giving the mooring post a different look after each touch. Avant-garde artist Dr. Hugo Heyrman's design plays with the idea of molecular interactions. Pairon presented the Languagebollart*, while ceramic artist Piet Stockmans made a striking blue Art Bollart. The six Art Bollarts will be installed at the entrance to the Belgian EU Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo 2010. The world exhibition opens 1 May, 2010. It is expected that some 70 million people will visit the Expo 2010. The Bollart installation will be part of the permanent collection of the brand new Museum of Belgium and the European Union in China when the Expo 2010 is over. Profits go to charity The artists will donate the bulk of the profits from the sale of their Art Bollarts to charities such as "De Vaart" in Antwerp, a day-center which provides basic services to homeless people (locker usage, shower rooms and a washing machine). www.bollart.be One does not have to travel all the way to China to admire the Art Bollarts... Christine Conix (b.1955) got her Master's Degree at the College for Architectural Sciences “Henry van de Velde” in Antwerp in 1978. Shortly after, she started her own architectural office. Currently, Conix Architects, based in Antwerp and Brussels, is lead by Christine Conix and Sylvie Bruyninckx, who joined the company as partner in 2005. Their team of 40 people works on various projects: the renovation of the Silver Museum Sterckshof in Antwerp (2007-2015), the residential project Ocean's Four in Gdansk, Poland (2008-2011), the masterplan for the industrial site and the new headquarters of Umicore in Antwerp (2005-2009), and the renovation of the Atomium in Brussels (2004-2007). In 2009, Conix Architects was asked by the Belgian government to design the Belgian EU Pavilion for the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai. Patrick Villas (b.1961) is a Belgian artist-designer-composer with numerous international exhibitions and publicly commissioned works. His work is found in renowned art collections. In 1991, he established the association Art-Prom, which organised cultural events such as Open Atelier. In 1995, Antwerp Mayor Leona Detiège officially recognised his initiative. The art event Salon d'Artistes developed from the Open Atelier principle, attracting more than 40,000 visitors and 200 participating artists. During the Salon 1994, a conference was organised with speakers such as Hans Ulrich Obrist. Villas also organised the Digital @rt Labyrinth, an introduction to the (at that time) relatively unknown possibilies of multimedia, in collaboration with Dr. Hugo Heyrman and Silicon Graphics. On a déjà vu les Art Bollarts du designer Nedda, de l’artiste d’avant-garde Dr. Hugo Heyrman, du céramiste Piet Stockmans et de l’auteur de bestsellersMarc Pairon. La série est maintenant complétée par les créations de l’architecte Christine Conix et de l’artiste designer Patrick Villas. La collection des six Art Bollarts a été sélectionnée pour le pavillon euro-belge de l’Exposition Universelle 2010 à Shanghai, pavillon dessiné par l’architecte. Agglomérats urbains Les bittes d’amarrage sont une image familière pour Christine Conix car, depuis son bureau à la Cockerillkaai à Anvers, l’architecte a une vue sur les quais de l’Escaut. Tout comme dans sa conception du pavillion belge, elle a donné à son Art Bollart une dimension d’agglomérats urbains, un ensemble d’entités conjugées, de bâtiments et de rues juxtaposés, qui forment le corps et l’âme des citadins. Son Art Bollart fait entr’autres allusion à la grande diversité et à la densité des villes et se veut une invitation ouverte à toutes les cultures et nationalités, conforme à l’accueil chaleureux de notre pays. “Il y a 5 figures géométriques différentes sur ma version de l’Art Bollart et un module spécial, qui forme une connection symbolique entre la Belgique/Bruxelles et la Chine/Shanghai. En plus, ces figures géométriques forment des fenêtres par où brille la lumière de l’âme des Anversois.”, dit Christine Conix. L’architecte, qui a également conçu le pavillon euro-belge, spécifie encore: “Je suis très heureuse d’avoir pu collaborer avec des artistes d’autres disciplines pour ce projet d’art qui a été séléctionné pour l’Expo à Shanghai. Les six Art Bollarts sont installés à l’entrée du pavillon euro-belge comme points de repos, où quelques 5000 personnes par heure les verront.” Graffiti Le sixième Art Bollart pour l’Expo à Shanghai est de la main de Patrick Villas, artiste et designer anversois. C’est lui qui, il y a plus de quatre ans, a “redécouvert” la bitte d’amarrage anversoise: “J’ai vu que sur bien des bollards, les Anversois et les visiteurs ont laissé diverses traces, des graffitis ou des pensées. J’invite le spectateur à y ajouter son propre message. J’ai donné l’exemple en y mettant le premier mot ainsi qu’une image.” « Les ports s'ouvrent sur les civilisations et accueillent toutes les cultures. Les bittes d'amarrage ou bollards en sont les bornes où s'amarrent les bateaux qui ramènent les voyageurs ou accueillent les visiteurs. Le Bollart anversois est un signe, non d’étroitesse d’esprit, mais au contraire d’ouverture aux autres, ennemi des tabous, dans le respect mutuel, la liberté de pensée et la richesse multiculturelle », explique Patrick Villas. 6 artistes, 6 Art Bollarts Dénommé Bollart – « bollard » en français et en anglais – il apporte une dimension créative supplémentaire à l’objet initial de la bitte d’amarrage anversoise. Christine Conix et Patrick Villas rejoignent les autres artistes qui ont tous donné leur propre interprétation artistique du Bollart. Ces dernières semaines ont déjà vu la présentation des Art Bollarts du designer Nedda, de Dr. Hugo Heyrman, de l’auteur de bestsellers Marc Pairon et de Piet Stockmans. Nedda a donné à son Bollart monochrome une peinture chaleureuse qui, si la température est agréable, réagit provisoirement et nettement au moindre contact et rend visibles les traces laissées sur la surface. L’artiste d’avant-garde Dr. Hugo Heyrman joue dans son concept des interactions moléculaires. Pairon a présenté son ‘Languagebollart’*, tandis que le céramiste Piet Stockmans a fait un Art Bollart dans son bleu stockmans caractéristique. Les six Art Bollarts seront présents au pavillon euro-belge de l’Exposition Universelle de Shanghai, qui ouvrira ses portes le 1er mai 2010. Quelque 70 millions de visiteurs sont attendus. Après l'Exposition Universelle 2010, la sélection Bollart sera intégrée dans les collections permanentes du Musée de la Belgique et de l'Union européenne actuellement en projet en Chine. Charité Les six artistes donnent une partie du profit provenant de la vente des Art Bollarts au centre des sans-abri ‘De Vaart’ et à quelques organisations plus modestes. L’accent de cette maison d’accueil pour les sans-abri est mis sur la combinaison d’aide en services et de le la mise à disposition de casiers, de douches et de machines à laver. La maison d’accueil ‘De Vaart’ est une initiative de la ville d’Anvers, exploitée par CAW Metropool pour le CPAS d’Anvers. Il n’est pas nécessaire d’aller en Chine pour admirer les Art Bollarts... À l’occasion de l’ouverture de l’Expo 2010, les Art Bollarts seront exposés du vendredi 7 jusqu’au jeudi 27 mai 2010 au Centre du Design De Winkelhaak à Anvers. Ses œuvres font partie de collections importantes. En 1991 il a créé l’a.s.b.l. Art-Prom qui organisait des événements culturels tel que 'Open Atelier' (‘Ateliers Ouverts’) à Anvers. Cette initiative a été officialisée par le Maire d’Anvers Leona Detiège en 1995. Du principe des 'Open Atelier' s’est formé le 'Salon d'Artistes', un salon d’art qui a eu plus de 40.000 visiteurs pour 200 artistes exposés. Au salon de 1994 un colloque avec Hans Ulrich Obrist a eu lieu. Villas a également organisé le ‘Digital @rt Labyrinth’, une présentation des possibilités multimédia – à l’époque encore peu connues, en collaboration avec le dr. Hugo Heyrman et Silicon Graphics. Zes Belgische kunstenaars stellen hun Art Bollarts voor de Expo 2010 voor

Christine Conix: “Art Bollart staat voor stedelijke gastvrijheid en vooruitgang” Antwerpen, 28 april 2010 – Zes gerenommeerde Belgische kunstenaars gaven elk hun eigen creatieve invulling aan de stilistische schoonheid van de Antwerpse meerpaal. Eerder al werden de Art Bollarts van topdesigner Nedda, avant-garde kunstenaar Dr. Hugo Heyrman, keramist Piet Stockmans en bestsellerauteur Marc Pairon voorgesteld. Nu wordt dat rijtje afgesloten met de ontwerpen van architecte Christine Conix en beeldhouwer-designer Patrick Villas. De zes Art Bollarts werden geselecteerd voor het Belgisch EU paviljoen van de Wereldtentoonstelling in Shanghai, dat eveneens werd ontworpen door de architecte. Stedelijke clusters Voor Christine Conix zijn de Antwerpse meerpalen een vertrouwd beeld. Vanuit haar kantoor aan de Cockerillkaai heeft de architecte immers zicht op de Scheldekaaien. Analoog aan haar ontwerp voor het paviljoen, geeft ze ook haar Art Bollart de dimensie van stedelijke clusters, een verzameling van samenwerkende inrichtingen, bijeen liggende gebouwen en straten, die het lichaam uitmaken van de zielsverwantschap van de stedelingen. Haar Art Bollart verwijst onder andere naar de grote diversiteit en densiteit van steden en vormt een open verwelkoming voor alle culturen en nationaliteiten, eigen aan de gastvrijheid van ons land. Het onderzoekcentrum Sirris stond in voor het technische hoogstandje om het ontwerp van Conix te verwezenlijken. Er kwam zelfs specifieke software aan te pas om met een robotarm het vijf-assige freeswerk te kunnen uitvoeren. “De meetkundige patronen op mijn versie van de Art Bollart bestaan uit 5 verschillende modules en 1 speciale module, die een symbolische connectie maakt tussen België/Brussel en China/Shanghai. Bovendien staan de meetkundige patronen symbool voor de ramen van waaruit het licht van het gemoed van de Antwerpse stedelingen tevoorschijn komt”, aldus Christine Conix. De architecte, die ook instond voor het ontwerp van het Belgisch EU paviljoen zelf, voegt eraan toe: “Ik ben enorm verheugd dat ik samen met kunstenaars van verschillende disciplines heb kunnen meewerken aan dit kunstproject dat geselecteerd werd voor de Expo in Shanghai. De zes Art Bollarts worden als zit- en rustobject opgesteld aan de ingang van het Belgisch EU paviljoen, waar zowat 5000 mensen per uur zullen voorbijkomen.” Meerpaalgraffiti De zesde Art Bollart voor de Expo in Shanghai is van de hand van de Antwerpse beeldhouwer-designer Patrick Villas. Hij was het die zowat vier jaar geleden de Antwerpse meerpaal ‘herontdekte’: “Ik stelde vast dat op heel wat van de bolders, zoals de meerpalen in de volksmond genoemd worden, door de eeuwen heen diverse boodschappen, graffiti van genoegens en ergernissen, van Antwerpenaren en bezoekers van de Scheldestad werden aangebracht. Met mijn versie van de Art Bollart nodig ik de toeschouwer uit eveneens zijn of haar boodschap toe te voegen. Ik heb alvast de eerste naamtekening en afbeelding geplaatst.” Patrick Villas: “De Bollart is een functioneel zitobject dat met zijn stilistische schoonheid eer betuigt aan de Antwerpse meerpaal, het havenicoon bij uitstek voor het sociale, toeristische en economische welkom. De Bollart staat immers niet voor bekrompenheid, maar voor vooruitgang, wars van taboes: het onderlinge respect, de vrijheid van meningsuiting, het kleurrijke van het multiculturele.” 6 kunstenaars, 6 Art Bollarts De benaming Bollart – ‘bollard’ in het Frans en Engels – verwijst naar het toevoegen van een extra creatieve dimensie aan het authentieke ontwerp van de Antwerpse meerpaal. Nedda bracht op haar Bollart een zwarte warmtegevoelige coating aan, waardoor de meerpaal er na aanraking steeds anders uitziet. Avant-garde kunstenaar Dr. Hugo Heyrman speelde in zijn ontwerp met de idee van moleculaire interactie. Pairon pakte uit met zijn ‘Languagebollart’*, terwijl keramist Piet Stockmans een opvallende blauwe Art Bollart voorstelde. De zes Art Bollarts maken deel uit van de inrichting van het Belgisch EU paviljoen van de Expo 2010 te Shanghai, die op 1 mei de deuren opent. In totaal worden van mei tot eind oktober ruim 70 miljoen bezoekers verwacht. Na de Expo wordt de Art Bollart-installatie opgenomen in de permanente collectie van het in China nog op te richten Museum van België en de Europese Unie. Goed doel De kunstenaars staan een groot deel van de winst die voortvloeit uit de verkoop van de Art Bollarts af aan o.a. het inloopcentrum ‘De Vaart’. De klemtoon van dit dagcentrum voor thuislozen ligt op hulpverlening in combinatie met het aanbieden van diensten zoals het gebruik van lockers, doucheruimtes en een wasmachine. Dit praktisch dienstenaanbod is voor veel volwassen thuisloze mannen en vrouwen een aanleiding tot het stellen van een vraag om hulp. De Vaart wordt uitgebaat door CAW Metropool in opdracht van het OCMW van Antwerpen en is een project dat kadert binnen het stedenfonds. Men hoeft niet naar China te reizen om de Bollarts te bewonderen... Naar aanleiding van de opening van de Expo 2010 worden de Art Bollarts van vrijdag 7 tot en met woensdag 26 mei 2010 tentoongesteld in designcentrum De Winkelhaak te Antwerpen. De vernissage van de tentoonstelling heeft plaats op donderdag 6 mei om 21 uur in aanwezigheid van de ontwerpers en de heer Philip Heylen, schepen van Cultuur van de stad Antwerpen. Marc Pairon en Piet Stockmans onthullen hun versie van Antwerpse meerpaal voor de Wereldexpo in Shanghai

Antwerpen, 14 april 2010 • De Bollart is het eerbetoon dat de Antwerpse beeldhouwer-designer Patrick Villas bracht aan de stilistische schoonheid van de Antwerpse meerpaal. Dit zitobject, dat uitnodigt tot een moment van bezinning, kreeg een eigen invulling door keramist Piet Stockmans en bestsellerauteur Marc Pairon. Hun Bollarts werden, net zoals die van Nedda en avant-garde kunstenaar Dr. Hugo Heyrman, geselecteerd voor het Belgisch-Europees paviljoen van de Expo 2010 te Shanghai. Eind april worden de twee overige Art Bollarts voor de wereldtentoonstelling voorgesteld. Ruim vier jaar geleden ‘herontdekte’ kunstenaar Patrick Villas de Antwerpse meerpaal. De benaming Bollart – ‘bollard’ in het Frans en Engels – verwijst naar het toevoegen van een extra creatieve dimensie aan het authentieke ontwerp. “Aan negatieve tendensen binnen een samenleving wordt in de media veel aandacht besteed. Aan het positieve veel minder. Samen met een aantal collega-kunstenaars willen wij met de heruitgave van de Bollart en de speciale edities het oorspronkelijke symbool van gastvrijheid van de Scheldestad onderstrepen. Havens zijn namelijk de poorten van de samenleving en meerpalen het symbool van de gastvrijheid. Het is het zinnebeeld van het verankeren, het komen en gaan – binnen welvoeglijke normen – over alle grenzen heen”, aldus de initiatiefnemers. “De Bollart belichaamt tevens het statement dat wie deelgenoot wordt van een samenleving, zelfs al is dat maar tijdelijk, het zielenleven van die maatschappij in het hart dient te dragen. Een stad bestaat trouwens niet louter uit stenen en beton. Wie daarom A zegt, moet ook Bollart zeggen.” Vanuit die optiek gaven zes gerenommeerde Belgische kunstenaars elk hun eigen plastische visie aan de Antwerpse meerpaal. Eerder werden reeds de Art Bollarts van de Antwerpse designer Nedda en avant-garde kunstenaar Dr. Hugo Heyrman voorgesteld. Eind april worden de twee overige voor het Belgisch-Europees paviljoen van de wereldtentoonstelling van Shanghai geselecteerde Art Bollarts bekendgemaakt. Talenversie van de Antwerpse meerpaal Bestsellerdichter Marc Pairon bracht op zijn Languagebollart* citaten aan van Einstein, Erasmus, Hitchcock, Michelangelo, Picasso, Oscar Wilde en zichzelf, en plaatste ze in een andere context. Hij voegde er visueel aantrekkelijke vertalingen (in het Hebreeuws, Chinees, Japans en Arabisch) aan toe, die zowel naar het multiculturele karakter van Antwerpen verwijzen als naar het ‘met genoegen ontvangen’ van bezoekers. Het tot stand gekomen meertouw van taal slingert hij rond de Bollart, als de draad van Ariadne, het houvast om te ontsnappen uit het labyrint van isolement. “Taal is – in zijn specifieke vorm of dialect – de meerpaal van de thuishaven. De betekenisdragende elementen van taal bestonden alvast. Eenieder kan woorden en tekens naar eigen goeddunken rangschikken. Ik hoef dus niet te herverzinnen wat al helder gezegd of geschreven werd. Daarom wendde ik ‘gevonden’ citaten aan van culturele en morele apostelen en voegde er een zinsnede bij, zodat ze in een andere context een nieuw verhaal vertellen”, aldus Marc Pairon. Blauwe Bollart Piet Stockmans beschikt als geroutineerd keramist over het meesterschap gevoelens en ritme uit de drukken in een materie die van nature koud en statisch is. Ieder van zijn Bollarts wordt persoonlijk door Stockmans beschreven en krijgt een persoonlijk karakter, alsof het kalligrafische dagboeken zijn. Het specifieke Stockmans-blauw is hierbij symbolisch voor het tastbare van het gemoed, trouw aan elk individu, elke stedeling. De installatie van diverse kunstuitvoeringen van de Antwerpse Bollart zal deel uitmaken van de inrichting van het Belgisch-Europees paviljoen van de Expo 2010 te Shanghai, waar tussen 1 mei en eind oktober 2010 elk uur zo’n 5000 bezoekers zullen voorbijkomen. De Wereldtentoonstelling opent haar deuren op 1 mei 2010. Er worden zo’n 70 miljoen bezoekers verwacht. Wanneer hij nu en dan in België was, voorzag hij in zijn levensbehoeften door het verkopen van gestencilde teksten in Antwerpse cafés. Zijn bijzondere stijl trok de aandacht van de entourage van de Pink Poets. In 1981 werd ‘Splinters’, Pairons poëziedebuut gepubliceerd. Ondanks de talrijke lovende kritieken hield Pairon het dichtersleven snel voor bekeken. Hij wendde zijn creatieve begaafdheid nadien vooral aan binnen de economische sector en ontpopte hij zich o.a. tot een notoir expert inzake Belgische Art Deco keramiek. Van zijn in 2009 gepubliceerde bundels gingen in één jaar tijd meer dan 50.000 exemplaren over de toonbank. ‘TOP 50 intiemste liefdesverzen!’ behaalde zelfs de 42ste plaats van de boekentop-100 van 2009. Piet Stockmans (°Leopoldsburg, 1940), Cultureel Ambassadeur van Vlaanderen, is ontegensprekelijk de meest polyvalente Europese keramische kunstenaar van zijn generatie, zowel wat zijn industriële toepassingen als zijn kunstedities betreft. Stockmans’ oeuvre is wereldwijd terug te vinden in de permanente verzameling van vermaarde designmusea en de lijst van internationale bekroningen groeit nog steeds aan. Stockmans was van 1966 tot 1989 ontwerper bij porseleinfabrikant Koninklijke Mosa B.V. te Maastricht. Van 1969 tot 1998 is Piet Stockmans docent Industriële Vormgeving aan de afdeling Productdesign van de Katholieke Hogeschool Limburg te Genk en van 1983 tot 1985 docent keramisch ontwerpen aan de Academie voor Industriële Vormgeving te Eindhoven. Antwerp, 15 April 2010 • The Bollart, created by the Belgian sculptor and designer Patrick Villas, honours the stylistic beauty of the Antwerp mooring post. This sitting, which suggests a moment of reflection, has been reinterpreted by ceramic artist Piet Stockmans and best-selling author Marc Pairon. Together with those of Belgian designer Nedda and avant-garde artist Dr. Hugo Heyrman, Pairon’s and Stockmans’ Art Bollarts have been selected for the Belgian-European Pavilion at the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai. Two more Art Bollarts for the World Expo will be presented at the end of April. Four years ago, Patrick Villas 'rediscovered' the mooring post of Antwerp, one of Europe’s largest ports. The name Bollart – ‘bollard’ in French and English – refers to the addition of an extra dimension to the original design. “The media pay a lot of attention to negative trends in society, and far less to positive aspects. With fellow artists, we want to use the Bollarts and the special editions to emphasize the genuine symbol of Antwerp's hospitality. Harbours are the gateways of society, and mooring posts the symbol of hospitality The image of the mooring post symbolizes the anchoring, and the coming and going – within decent standards – across all frontiers.” According to the artists, "the Bollart also embodies the statement that anyone who is part of a society, even though it is only temporary, must bear the soul of that society in the heart. A city is not just the sum of some bricks and concrete." This thought was the starting point for six well-known Belgian artists to apply their own artistic visions to the Antwerp mooring post. The Art Bollarts of Nedda and Dr. Hugo Heyrman were presented earlier this month. The two other Art Bollarts selected for the Belgian-European Pavillion at the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai will be presented in two weeks. Languagebollart Flemish best-selling author Marc Pairon has put quotes from Albert Einstein, Erasmus, Alfred Hitchcock, Michelangelo, Pablo Picasso, Oscar Wilde and himself on his Languagebollart*, and placed them in a completely different context. He added visually attractive translations (in Arabic, Hebrew, Japanese and Chinese) referring to the multi-cultural character of Antwerp and to the ‘warm welcome’ for visitors. He wrapped the mooring rope made with these quotes around his Bollart, as if it were Ariadne’s wire: the grip to escape from the labyrinth of isolation. Marc Pairon stated: “Language is - in its specific form or dialect - the bollard of one’s homeport. The meaningful elements of language already exist long in in advance. Anyone can reorder these words and signs as he wants. Therefore, I do not need to reinvent what has already been clearly said or written. For this reason, I used 'found quotations' of cultural and moral sages, and added one sentence, to make them tell a new story.” Blue Bollart As a thoroughly experienced ceramicist, Piet Stockmans is able to express feelings and rhythm in material which is by nature quite cold and static. All of Stockmans’ Art Bollarts are hand-painted by the artist and have received a personal touch, as if they were calligraphic diaries. The typical ‘Stockmans-blue’ is here symbolic of the tangible aspect of the mind; faithful to each individual, each city resident. An installation of the diverse artistic expressions of the Antwerp Bollart will be shown in the Belgian-European Pavillion at the Shanghai World Expo 2010. The world exhibitition opens 1 May, 2010. It is expected that some 70 million people will visit the Expo 2010. When he was occasionally back in Belgium, he earned his living with stencilled texts and poems in Antwerp cafés. His original style caught the attention of the ‘Pink Poets’. Pairon’s debut volume of poetry was published in 1981. In spite of garnering many favourable reviews, Pairon stopped writing very soon after that and started to use his creative talent in the business sector. Piet Stockmans (Leopoldsburg, Belgium; b.1940), cultural ambassador of Flanders, is one of the most the most versatile European ceramic artists of his generation in the fields of both industrial applications and art editions. Stockmans' work can be found in the permanent collections of renowned design museums worldwide, and the list of international acclaim is still growing. From 1966 to 1989, Stockmans worked as a designer at the porcelain manufacturer Koninklijke Mosa B.V. in Maastricht (The Netherlands). He taught Industrial Design in the Department of Product Design at The Catholic College of Limburg (Belgium) from 1969 to 1998, and Ceramic Design at the Academy for Industrial Design at Eindhoven (The Netherlands) from1983 to 1985. Anvers, 14 avril 2010 – Le Bollart est l'hommage rendu par le sculpteur anversois Patrick Villas aux proportions harmonieuses de la bitte d'amarrage anversoise. Le céramiste Piet Stockmans et le poète Marc Pairon donnent leur propre interprétation à ce siège, qui est une véritable invitation au repos. Leurs Bollarts, tout comme ceux de Nedda et de l’artiste d’avant-garde Dr. Hugo Heyrman, ont été sélectionnés pour le pavillon belgo-européen de l’Exposition Universelle 2010 à Shanghai. Fin avril les deux derniers Art-Bollarts seront présentés. Il y a plus de quatre ans, l’artiste designer Patrick Villas « redécouvre » la bitte d’amarrage anversoise. Dénommé Bollart – « bollard » en français et en anglais – il donne à l’objet initial une dimension supplémentaire créative. « Les médias expriment souvent les tendances négatives, portant rarement leur attention sur des projets positifs qu'on retrouve pourtant dans de nombreuses initiatives. Avec notre Édition Spéciale des Bollarts, nous voulons montrer l'accueil chaleureux qui est celui de la Belgique. Le bollard est le symbole des rapports interculturels, aussi bien sur le plan international que dans notre propre pays. Le Bollart est également le symbole de l’idée que toute personne faisant partie d’une civilisation, devrait adopter – ne fût-ce que temporairement –à savoir l’âme de cette société. Languagebollart Marc Pairon, après avoir publié quatre best-sellers, est devenu le poète flamand le plus renommé. Son bleu stockmans, la couleur qu’il a créée, y est le symbole de la connivence, de la loyauté des citadins. Les différentes versions spéciales du Bollart anversois seront présentes au pavillon belgo-européen de l’Exposition Universelle de Shanghai, qui ouvrira ses portes le 1er mai 2010. Piet Stockmans, Ambassadeur Culturel de la Flandre (né à Bourg-Léopold en 1940) est bien connu dans le milieu international de la céramique contemporaine. On lui doit d’être l’un des premiers céramistes belges à s’être départi, dès le milieu des années 1970, d’une vision trop stéréotypée de sa discipline. Designer officiel de la firme hollandaise Mosa dès 1966, Stockmans a contribué au développement de la marque en dessinant des objets destinés le plus souvent au secteur hôtelier. Designer indépendant depuis 1991, Pieter Stockmans a travaillé pour Royal Boch, en 1998 (service Veni) et en 2007 (service Stackable). De 1969 jusqu’en 1998 Piet Stockmans a été professeur à la haute-école du Limbourg à Genk et de 1983 juqu’en 1985 à l’Académie d’Eindhoven (NL). Novateurs tant sur le plan de la forme que celui de la fonctionnalité, ses travaux font de lui l’un des plus importants designers belges d’après-guerre.

Nedda and Dr. Hugo Heyrman Make Special Editions of Antwerp Mooring Post for Shanghai World Expo 2010

Antwerp (Belgium), 26 March 2010 • Nedda, recipient of the Flanders Cultural Award for Design in 2009 and designer of the interior of the Belgian Antarctic research station Princess Elisabeth, and avant-garde artist Dr. Hugo Heyrman are the first artists to reinterpret the Bollart. This sitting object, created by Patrick Villas, honours the stylistic beauty of the Antwerp mooring post. The Bollart has been selected for the Belgian Pavilion at the Shanghai World Exhibition, which will welcome some 5000 visitors per hour from May to October 2010. Belgian designer-artist Patrick Villas ‘rediscovered’ the mooring post of one of Europe’s largest ports. The name Bollart – ‘bollard’ in French and English – refers to the addition of an extra dimension to the original design. After three years of research, numerous applications have become possible. The original Antwerp mooring post, now recreated in a manageable material, is not only an icon of understanding but also a multifunctional testimonial: the primary resting point, very basic, without any extras; namely, a chair. “Harbours are the gateways of society and mooring posts the symbol of hospitality. For centuries, countless citizens and visitors to Antwerp carved their messages into the ‘bolders’, as the mooring posts are called in Flemish. They are the graffiti of personal revelations. The Antwerp Bollart stands not for narrow-mindedness, but for progress: mutual respect, freedom of speech and the colourful aspect of a multicultural society”, stated Patrick Villas. This thought was the starting point for six well-known Belgian artists to apply their own artistic views to the Antwerp mooring post. It is their way of emphasizing the symbolic value of this landmark of hospitality on the banks of the river Scheldt. The first two Art Bollart editions have been created by Nedda and Dr. Hugo Heyrman. Four other art editions will be revealed soon. Warmth-sensitivity and molecular interaction With her version of the Antwerp Bollart, Nedda accentuates the authentic ‘tactile factor’ of the mooring post: “Each bollard carries a history of the joys of life. Who kissed whom on which bollard? Who awaited someone to return home safely? Who was listening to the buzz of an active society?” Nedda makes these marks visible again by putting warmth-sensitive paint on the monochrome Bollart. The paint makes the slightest touch visible through temperature change. Entitled ‘The Memory of the Bollart’, the work of Dr. Hugo Heyrman targets the powerful appearance of the Bollart in colour, form and meaning from the perspective of the painter: “Optically, the crude granules create the effect of a high-tech pointillist painting. It is a pictoral enlargement of molecular interactions. She works for such renowned names as Hermès, Puiforcat, Royal Boch, Eternum, Villeroy & Boch, Gense, Obumex, Carl Mertens, and Robbe & Berking. Her designs have earned numerous awards and prizes. In 1997, she won the Henry van de Velde Award for young talent. Nedda was proclaimed Belgian Designer of 2007, and last year she was nominated for the second time for the 'Talents du Luxe’. In 2009, she received the prestigious Flemish Cultural Award for Design. She has taught at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp since 2007. Dr. Hugo Heyrman is a painter, film maker, internet pioneer and doctor of art history. In the sixties, he emerged as an avant-garde artist in happenings, actions and conceptual art. From 1973 onwards, he dedicated himself to the art of painting and won the Prize for Young Belgian Painting Art 1974. Dr. Hugo Heyrman immediately made an impression with the cyle ‘The Cycle of Street Life’. He painted a street view in Antwerp at different times and in diverse weather conditions, all from the same point of view. Dr. Hugo Heyrman’s oeuvre makes a statement on the poetics of painting, on a perceptive way of thinking, and on questioning the truth of images.
