Antwerp (Belgium), 26 March 2010 • Nedda, recipient of the Flanders Cultural Award for Design in 2009 and designer of the interior of the Belgian Antarctic research station Princess Elisabeth, and avant-garde artist Dr. Hugo Heyrman are the first artists to reinterpret the Bollart. This sitting object, created by Patrick Villas, honours the stylistic beauty of the Antwerp mooring post. The Bollart has been selected for the Belgian Pavilion at the Shanghai World Exhibition, which will welcome some 5000 visitors per hour from May to October 2010. Belgian designer-artist Patrick Villas ‘rediscovered’ the mooring post of one of Europe’s largest ports. The name Bollart – ‘bollard’ in French and English – refers to the addition of an extra dimension to the original design. After three years of research, numerous applications have become possible. The original Antwerp mooring post, now recreated in a manageable material, is not only an icon of understanding but also a multifunctional testimonial: the primary resting point, very basic, without any extras; namely, a chair. “Harbours are the gateways of society and mooring posts the symbol of hospitality. For centuries, countless citizens and visitors to Antwerp carved their messages into the ‘bolders’, as the mooring posts are called in Flemish. They are the graffiti of personal revelations. The Antwerp Bollart stands not for narrow-mindedness, but for progress: mutual respect, freedom of speech and the colourful aspect of a multicultural society”, stated Patrick Villas. This thought was the starting point for six well-known Belgian artists to apply their own artistic views to the Antwerp mooring post. It is their way of emphasizing the symbolic value of this landmark of hospitality on the banks of the river Scheldt. The first two Art Bollart editions have been created by Nedda and Dr. Hugo Heyrman. Four other art editions will be revealed soon. Warmth-sensitivity and molecular interaction With her version of the Antwerp Bollart, Nedda accentuates the authentic ‘tactile factor’ of the mooring post: “Each bollard carries a history of the joys of life. Who kissed whom on which bollard? Who awaited someone to return home safely? Who was listening to the buzz of an active society?” Nedda makes these marks visible again by putting warmth-sensitive paint on the monochrome Bollart. The paint makes the slightest touch visible through temperature change. Entitled ‘The Memory of the Bollart’, the work of Dr. Hugo Heyrman targets the powerful appearance of the Bollart in colour, form and meaning from the perspective of the painter: “Optically, the crude granules create the effect of a high-tech pointillist painting. It is a pictoral enlargement of molecular interactions. The history of matter, revealed by the matter itself.” An installation of the diverse artistic expressions of the Antwerp Bollart will be shown in the Belgian-European Pavillion at the Shanghai World Expo 2010. The world exhibitition opens 1 May, 2010. It is expected that some 70 million people will visit the Expo 2010. When the Expo 2010 is over, the Bollart installation will be part of the permanent collection of the brand new Museum of Belgium and the European Union in China. * * *
Dr. Hugo Heyrman is a painter, film maker, internet pioneer and doctor of art history. In the sixties, he emerged as an avant-garde artist in happenings, actions and conceptual art. From 1973 onwards, he dedicated himself to the art of painting and won the Prize for Young Belgian Painting Art 1974. Dr. Hugo Heyrman immediately made an impression with the cyle ‘The Cycle of Street Life’. He painted a street view in Antwerp at different times and in diverse weather conditions, all from the same point of view. Anvers, 26 mars 2010 – Nedda, qui a obtenu l’année dernière le Prix Culturel de la Communauté flamande pour le Design et qui a entr’autres assuré l’aménagement intérieur de la station de recherche Princesse Elizabeth en Antarctique, ainsi que le Dr. Hugo Heyrman sont les premiers à donner leur propre interprétation du Bollart. Ce siège, véritable invitation au repos, est l'hommage rendu par Patrick Villas aux proportions harmonieuses de la bitte d'amarage anversoise. Cette nouvelle édition a été sélectionnée pour le pavillon belgo-européen de l’Exposition Universelle 2010 à Shanghai, qui accueillera quelque 5.000 visiteurs par heure d’ici octobre 2010.
« Les ports s'ouvrent sur les civilisations et accueillent toutes les cultures. Les bittes d'amarrage ou bollards en sont les bornes où s'amarrent les bateaux qui ramènent les voyageurs ou qui accueillent les visiteurs.Sur bien des bollards, les Anversois et les visiteurs ont laissé diverses traces, les graffitis de leurs révélations. Le Bollart anversois est un signe, non d’étroitesse d’esprit, mais au contraire de progrès, ennemi des tabous, par le respect mutuel, la liberté de pensée et la richesse multiculturelle », explique Patrick Villas. C’est à partir de ce point de vue que six artistes belges renommés ont donné leur propre vision plastique à la bitte d’amarrage anversoise. Ils soulignent ainsi la valeur symbolique de la bienvenue aux bords de l’Escaut. Les deux premiers Bollarts spéciaux sont l’œuvre de Nedda et du Dr. Hugo Heyrman. Quatre autres éditions spéciales du Bollart les rejoindront très prochainement. Sensation de chaleur et interaction moléculaire Nedda, par sa création du Bollart anversois, accentue l’authentique idée de caresse de la bitte d’amarrage : « Chaque Bollart porte une histoire sur les plaisirs de l’existence. Qui y a embrassé un être cher ? Qui y a attendu un retour espéré ? Qui y a perçu le souffle d’une intense vie en commun ? » Nedda a rendu leur visibilité à ces traces en donnant au Bollart monochrome une peinture chaleureuse qui, si la température est agréable, réagit provisoirement et clairement au moindre contact. Sous le titre "la mémoire du Bollart", le Dr Hugo Heyrman exprime la force du rayonnement de la bitte d'amarrage, par sa couleur, sa forme et sa signification accentuées par le regard d'un peintre. « D’un point de vue optique, la graine agit comme une peinture pointilliste high-tech. C’est l’agrandissement pictural d’interactions moléculaires matérielles. L’histoire de la matière racontée par la matière elle-même. » Les différentes versions spéciales du Bollart anversois seront présentes au pavillon belgo-européen de l’Exposition Universelle de Shanghai, qui ouvrira ses portes le 1er mai 2010. Nedda en Dr. Hugo Heyrman maken eigen versie van Antwerpse meerpaal voor Wereldexpo in Shanghai
Kunstenaar-designer Patrick Villas ‘herontdekte’ de Antwerpse meerpaal. De benaming Bollart – ‘bollard’ in het Frans en Engels – verwijst naar het toevoegen van een extra creatieve dimensie aan het authentieke ontwerp. Na drie jaar research kunnen nu diverse toepassingen worden gerealiseerd. Door het ontwerp van de oorspronkelijke Antwerpse meerpaal in een hanteerbaar materiaal uit te voeren, blijkt het niet alleen een icoon van verstandhouding te zijn, maar het is tevens een multifunctionele getuigenis: het rustpunt bij uitstek, primair en zonder franjes, nl. een stoel.
“Havens zijn de poorten van de samenleving en meerpalen het symbool van de gastvrijheid. In heel wat bolders, zoals meerpalen in de volksmond genoemd worden, lieten Antwerpenaren en bezoekers door de eeuwen heen allerlei sporen na: graffiti van ontboezemingen. De Antwerpse Bollart staat immers niet voor bekrompenheid, maar voor vooruitgang, wars van taboes: onderling respect, vrije meningsuiting en het kleurrijke van het multiculturele”, aldus Patrick Villas.
Vanuit die optiek gaven zes gerenommeerde Belgische kunstenaars elk hun eigen plastische visie aan de Antwerpse meerpaal. Ze onderstrepen daarmee de symbolische waarde van deze bakens van gastvrijheid aan de oevers van de Schelde. De eerste twee bijzondere Bollarts zijn van de hand van Nedda en Dr. Hugo Heyrman. Binnenkort worden vier andere speciale edities van de Bollart onthuld.
Warmtegevoelig
Nedda accentueert met haar creatie van de Antwerpse Bollart de authentieke aaibaarheidsfactor van de meerpaal: “Elke Bollart draagt een geschiedenis over de geneugten van het bestaan. Wie zoende wie op welke Bollart? Wie wachtte er op een behouden thuiskomst? Wie hoorde er het zinderen van een actieve samenleving?” Nedda maakt die sporen terug zichtbaar door op een monochrome Bollart warmtegevoelige verf aan te brengen die, indien de temperatuur behaaglijk is, de minste aanraking tijdelijk duidelijk visualiseert.
Moleculaire interactie
Met als titel ‘Het geheugen van de Bollart’ heeft Dr. Hugo Heyrman de enorme kracht die een meerpaal uitstraalt in kleur, vorm en betekenis geaccentueerd vanuit de visie van een schilder: "Optisch gezien werkt de grove korrel als een high-tech pointillistisch schilderij. Het is een picturale uitvergroting van materiële moleculaire interacties. De geschiedenis van de materie, verteld door de materie zelf."
De installatie van diverse kunstuitvoeringen van de Antwerpse Bollart zal deel uitmaken van de inrichting van het Belgisch-Europees paviljoen van de Expo 2010 te Shanghai, De Wereldtentoonstelling opent haar deuren op 1 mei 2010. Er worden zo’n 70 miljoen bezoekers verwacht.
Na de Expo 2010 zal de Bollart-installatie opgenomen worden in de permanente collectie van het in China nog op te richten Museum van België en de Europese Unie.

Dr. Hugo Heyrman is schilder, filmmaker, internetpionier en doctor in de kunstwetenschappen. In de jaren zestig profileerde hij zich als avant-garde kunstenaar met happenings, acties en conceptuele kunst. Vanaf 1973 legde hij zich toe op de schilderkunst en werd hij laureaat van de Prijs Jonge Belgische Schilderkunst 1974. Dr. Hugo Heyrman maakte meteen indruk met de cyclus 'De kringloop van het straatleven'. Vanuit eenzelfde gezichtspunt schilderde hij een Antwerps straatgezicht op verschillende tijdstippen en in allerlei weersomstandigheden. Het oeuvre van Dr. Hugo Heyrman maakt een statement over de poëtica van de schilderkunst, over een waarnemend denken en over het in vraag stellen van de waarheid van beelden. Nedda en Vange stellen bamboestoel voor tijdens designbeurs in Milaan
Het prototype van de Chaise-à-Secret was in het najaar van 2008 al te zien op de stand van ‘La Belgique des autres’ tijdens de Internationale Designbiënnale van Saint-Etienne (Frankrijk). Deze stoel was één van de zes exemplaren, die Nedda had laten maken om rond haar eigen Secretable-werktafel thuis te plaatsen. Kenmerkend aan de Chaise-à-Secret is het geheime opbergvak onder de zitting.Onlangs besliste de Luikse producent Vange om een bamboeversie van deze comfortabele stoel op de markt te brengen. “Bamboe biedt heel wat voordelen en is ecologisch gezien een zeer interessant materiaal”, legt Nedda uit. “Het is de snelst groeiende plant op aarde. Ieder jaar produceert de moederplant verschillende nieuwe scheuten, die na 5 jaar later al volgroeid zijn. Hoewel bamboe een grassoort is en geen houtsoort, is het toch harder dan eik.”
De bamboestoel is al Nedda’s derde meubelontwerp, dat in minder dan een jaar in productie gaat. Enkele maanden terug bracht het West-Vlaamse Obumex al de Stool en de Secretable uit, waarvan het prototype vorig jaar op de Milanese designbeurs te zien was. Net zoals bij de Chaise-à-Secret zijn voor deze tafelreeks en kruk de onopvallende opbergruimtes heel karakteristiek.
Secretable & Stool
De Secretable, die in vier maten bestaat, past zowel in keuken als kantoor. Ogenschijnlijk is het een gewone tafel, maar onder het tafelblad zitten verschillende opbergvakken, die dieper werden geplaatst om niet op te vallen. Brieven, paperassen, kranten, tijdschriften en andere rommel die soms op de tafel rondslingert, verdwijnen in een handomdraai in deze handige vakken.
Om de diepte van de opbergvakken te beperken, werden twee dwarsbalken aangebracht, die het tafelblad dragen. Nedda bedacht een handige functie voor de ruimte tussen de dwarsbalken. Ze zit verborgen onder scharnierende luiken. Klein keukengerei en kantoormateriaal kunnen makkelijk worden opgeborgen in deze geheime vakken. Als basis voor de Secretable en de Stool wordt fineer eik gebruikt, maar de klant kan de afwerking (houtsoort, kleur en materialencombinatie) zelf kiezen.

Vange werd in 1987 opgericht door Michel Van Genechten. Binnen het familiebedrijf BEA had hij eerder al vanuit zijn passie voor architectuur, design en hedendaagse kunst een beroep gedaan op jonge onafhankelijke designers en architecten voor het ontwerp van de visuele identiteit en productdesign. Obumex werd in 1960 opgericht door Eli Ostyn. Hij startte met schoolmeubilair, maar de keukens in een uitgepuurde vorm volgden snel. Nedda and Vange Present Bamboo Chair at Design Fair in Milan
The prototype of the Chaise-à-Secret was shown in the autumn of 2008 at the International Design Biannual of Saint-Etienne (France). This chair was one of six that Nedda had made for the Secretable in her house. The secret compartment under the seat is the main feature of the Chaise-à-Secret.Recently, the Belgian design furniture producer Vange decided to put a bamboo version of this comfortable chair on the market. Nedda explains: “Bamboo offers several advantages and is, from an ecological point of view, very interesting material to work with. It is the fastest growing plant on earth. Each year the parent plant produces several new stems which, after 5 years, are ready to be used. Although bamboo is a grass species and not wood, it is harder than oak.”
The bamboo chair, Nedda’s third piece of furniture, went into production less than a year ago. The Belgian producer Obumex launched the Stool and Secretable just a few months ago, after the prototype was exhibited last year at the Milan design fair. As with the Chaise-à-Secret, the table’s and stool’s distinctive characteristic is the hidden storage compartments.
Secretable & Stool
The Secretable, which is available in four sizes, fits both kitchens and offices. At first sight it is a very ordinary looking table, but underneath are several storage spaces that have been deliberately positioned deep so that they do not attract attention. Letters, papers, newspapers, magazines and other items that typically clutter table tops now easily disappear into these handy compartments below the table leaf.
To limit the depth of these storage compartments, two crossbeams have been inserted that support the table surface. Nedda thought of a handy function for these beams. The space between the crossbeams is covered with several hinged panels. These hidden compartments are ideal for storing small kitchen utensils or office materials. The Secretable and the Stool is oak veneer, and the customer can decide on the finish (wood, colour and material combination).

Nedda et Vange présentent une chaise en bambou au salon du design de Milan
Le prototype de la Chaise-à-Secret a été exposé à l’automne 2008 sur le stand de « La Belgique des autres », lors de la Biennale internationale de design de Saint-Etienne (France). Cette chaise était l’un des six exemplaires que Nedda avait fait fabriquer pour les placer autour de sa propre Secretable-table de travail, à sa maison. La particularité de la Chaise-à-secret est l’espace de rangement secret sous l’assise.C’est il y a peu que le producteur liégeois Vange a décidé de mettre sur le marché une version en bambou de cette confortable chaise. « Le bambou présente nombre d’avantages et est un matériau très intéressant du point de vue écologique », explique Nedda. « C’est la plante qui pousse le plus vite sur terre. Chaque année, la plante-mère produit plusieurs nouvelles tiges qui, cinq ans après, ont déjà atteint toute leur croissance. Et, bien que le bambou soit de la famille des herbes, il est malgré tout plus dur que le chêne. »
La chaise en bambou est déjà le troisième meuble crée par Nedda en moins d’un an et qui est mis en production. Depuis quelques mois, en effet, la société belge Obumex produit le tabouret et la Secretable, dont le prototype avait précisément été présenté au même salon milanais, l’année dernière. Tout comme pour la Chaise-à-Secret, ce sont les espaces de rangements masqués qui sont caractéristiques de cette ligne de table et de tabouret.
Secretable & Stool
La Secretable, disponible en quatre mesures, est idéale tant pour la cuisine qu’au bureau. C’est que, à première vue, il s’agit d’une simple table. Mais à première vue seulement car, sous le dessus de table se dissimulent différents compartiments de rangement placés en profondeur. Lettres, paperasses, journaux, cahiers et autre bric-à-brac qui, souvent, encombrent une table, qu’elle soit de cuisine ou de bureau, disparaissent ainsi en un tournemain dans ces judicieux rangements.
Deux poutres transversales supportant la table déterminent la profondeur des espaces de rangement. Entre ces poutres, un espace. Perdu ? Pas du tout. Nedda a imaginé là encore une fonction pratique pour cet espace, qui est rendu parfaitement accessible, à partir du dessus de table, par deux panneaux articulés. Du coup, cet espace secret accueille idéalement les petits ustensiles de cuisine et de bureau. Un plaquage de chêne est proposé pour la version standard de la Secretable et du Stool, mais le client peut choisir tout autre finition (type de bois, couleur et combinaison des matériaux).

Nedda El-Asmar a suivi une formation de création de bijoux et d’orfèvrerie à l’Académie Royale des Beaux-arts d’Anvers et au Royal College of Art, à Londres. Elle crée entre autres pour Hermès, Puiforcat, Royal Boch, Eternum, Villeroy & Boch, Gense, Obumex, Carl Mertens et Robbe & Berking. Elle travaille depuis mars 2007 avec le designer Erik Indekeu. Son travail a déjà été récompensé par de nombreux prix. En 1997, Nedda a reçu le prix Henry Van de Velde pour Jeune Talent et, en 2007, elle a été élue Designer belge de l’Année. L’année précédente, elle avait été pour la deuxième fois nominée aux « Talents du Luxe », considérés comme les Oscars du monde du design. Début 2009, Nedda a reçu le prestigieux Prix Culturel 2008 de la Communauté flamande pour le design. Depuis 2007, elle enseigne également à l’Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts d’Anvers.

Vange a été créé en 1987 par Michel Van Genechten. Il avait auparavant fait un métier, au sein de l’entreprise familiale BEA, de sa passion pour l’architecture, le design et l’art contemporain, au profit de jeunes designers indépendants et d’architectes pour le développement de l’identité visuelle et de la production design. Vange, établi à Seraing, près de Liège, est entre-temps devenu un acteur majeur dans le domaine de la création de meubles design et dans la production de mobilier contemporain.

Obumex a été créé en 1960 par Eli Ostyn, en démarrant par la production de mobilier scolaire, production très vite étendue à celle de cuisines aux lignes épurées. Deux décennies plus tard, ces lignes de cuisines se sont vues complétées par des collections de meubles donnant tout son essor à l’aménagement intérieur. Le fils de Eli Ostyn, Geert Ostyn, a entre-temps pris la direction de l’entreprise qu’il dirige maintenant depuis 25 ans. Obumex compte 100 collaborateurs.

Nedda ontwerpt de Sastrugi - Polar Survival Set voor het Princess Elisabeth-station
De collectie bestaat uit een grote mok (33cl), een bord (Ø 25cm), een bowl (Ø 15cm) en een lepel in keramiek. Veelzijdigheid lag aan de basis van het ontwerp. De bowl kan gebruikt worden voor zowel soep, fruitsla, muesli… en met de vier basisstukken kunnen alle mogelijke maaltijden aan de wetenschappers worden voorgeschoteld.
Nedda legt uit waarom de Sastrugi - Polar Survival Set vooral aangenaam moest ogen en aanvoelen: “Wanneer de wetenschappers in ijskoude omstandigheden hun werk hebben gedaan en in het poolstation aankomen, dan is het belangrijk dat zij opnieuw op krachten kunnen komen met een stevige maaltijd en warme drank. Daarom moest de Sastrugi-set letterlijk en figuurlijk hartverwarmend zijn”.
Sneeuwduinen
De stukken liggen aangenaam in de hand en zijn onderhoudsvriendelijk. De rand van elk collectiestuk loopt een beetje schuin omhoog, een verwijzing naar de positie van Antarctica ten opzicht van de as van de Aarde. De naam Sastrugi verwijst naar het oorspronkelijk Russische woord voor de typische harde sneeuwduinen en sneeuwribbels, die door de wind worden gevormd.
Nedda ontwierp eerder al de Royal Breakfast Set voor Royal Boch. Het bedrijf werd opgericht in 1841 en is vandaag de enige Belgische keramiekproducent. Royal Boch is één van de officiële leveranciers van het Princess Elisabeth-station en steunt actief de International Polar Foundation.
Een geschenkdoos met de vier basisstukken kost €58. Telkens een Sastrugi – Polar Survival Set wordt verkocht, gaat een deel van de opbrengst naar de International Polar Foundation.

Het Princess Elisabeth-station
Het Princess Elisabeth-station werd op een rotskam in Oost-Antarctica gebouwd in opdracht van de International Polar Foundation.
Deze Belgische poolbasis biedt met zijn ultramoderne faciliteiten onderdak aan 25 wetenschappers, die onderzoek gaan verrichten naar veranderingen in het klimaat. Het is het enige onderzoekstation op Antarctica, dat geen CO2 uitstoot en volledig op hernieuwbare energiebronnen draait.
Nedda stond in voor de binnenhuisinrichting van het Princess Elisabeth-station en maakte een doordachte selectie van functionele en esthetische interieurvoorwerpen zoals tafels, stoelen, bedden, matrassen, bedlinnen, keuken- en tafelgerei.
Bij de keuze van de voorwerpen en materialen waren kwaliteit, duurzaamheid en respect voor mens en milieu tijdens het productieproces zeer belangrijke criteria.
Clei, Electrolux, Facq, Libeco, Royal Boch en Vitra Belgium zijn officiële leveranciers van het Princess Elisabeth-station. Daarnaast leverden ook AVG, Demeyere, Recticel en Villeroy & Boch materiaal.

Wat zijn ‘sastrugi’?
Sastrugi (soms ook wel ‘zastrugi’ geschreven) is een woord, dat oorspronkelijk uit de Russische taal komt.
Het verwijst naar de harde duinen en ribbels, die worden gevormd door de opgewaaide sneeuw. Sastrugi zijn typisch voor poollandschappen en komen veel voor op Antarctica.
Nedda El-Asmar studeerde juweelontwerp en edelsmeedkunst aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen en aan het Royal College of Art in Londen. Ze werkt voor o.a. Hermès, Puiforcat, Royal Boch, Eternum, Gense, Villeroy & Boch, Robbe & Berking en Carl Mertens.
Nedda sleepte reeds tal van prijzen in de wacht. In 1997 won ze de Henry van de Velde Award voor Jong Talent en in 2007 werd Nedda uitgeroepen tot ‘Belgisch Designer van het Jaar’. In 2008 werd ze voor de tweede maal genomineerd voor de ‘Talents du Luxe’, die worden beschouwd als de oscars van de designwereld. Verleden week kreeg Nedda de prestigieuze Cultuurprijs Vlaanderen voor Vormgeving 2008, die om de twee jaar wordt toegekend.
Sinds 2007 geeft Nedda ook les aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen.

Nedda Designs the Sastrugi - Polar Survival Set for the Princess Elisabeth Station
The collection consists of a large mug (33 cl), a plate (Ø 25 cm), a bowl (Ø 15 cm) and a ceramic spoon. Versatility was the basis of the design. The bowl can be used for soup, fruit salad, muesli… and the four basic pieces come in handy for all possible meals at the polar station.
Nedda explains why the Sastrugi - Polar Survival Set had to look and feel very nice: "When the scientists have done their job in ice cold weather conditions and have returned to the polar station, it is important that they gain strength again thanks to a solid meal and a warm drink. Therefore, the Sastrugi set literally and figuratively are heart-warming”.
Snow dunes
The collection pieces are comfortable to use and are easy to clean. The edge of each object is a bit tilted up, which is a reference to the position of Antarctica in relation to the axis of the Earth. The name ‘Sastrugi’ refers to the original Russian word for the typical hard snow dunes and ripples, which are formed by wind.
Nedda has already designed the Royal Breakfast Set for Royal Boch. The company was founded in 1841 and is presently the only Belgian ceramic manufacturer. Royal Boch is one of the official suppliers of the Princess Elisabeth station and supports actively the International Polar Foundation.
A gift box with a mug, a plate, a bowl and a spoon costs €58. Whenever a Sastrugi - Polar Survival Set is sold, a part of the proceeds goes to the International Polar Foundation.

About the Princess Elisabeth Station
The Princess Elisabeth station was built by the International Polar Foundation on a mountain ridge in East Antarctica.
This Belgian polar base offers, with its ultramodern facilities, shelter to 25 scientists who will carry out research on climate change. It is the only scientific station on Antarctica that does not emit any carbon dioxide and runs entirely on renewable energy sources.
Nedda, Belgian designer of the Year 2007, took care of the interior decoration of the scientific research station and made a well-thought out selection of functional and aesthetic interior design objects such as tables, chairs, beds, mattresses, bed linen, kitchen material and tableware.
The choice of the objects and materials was heavily influenced by criteria such as quality, sustainability and respect for people and the environment during the production process.

What does ‘sastrugi’ mean?
Sastrugi (also written 'zastrugi') is originally a Russian word.
Sastrugi are sharp irregular grooves or ridges formed on a snow surface by wind erosion and deposition. They are found in polar regions and are very common in Antarctica.
Nedda El-Asmar studied jewellery design and silversmithing at the Royal Academy for Fine Arts in Antwerp, and she completed her education at the Royal College of Art in London. She works for renowned names as Hermès, Puiforcat, Royal Boch, Eternum, Villeroy & Boch, Gense, Obumex, Carl Mertens, and Robbe & Berking.
Her designs have earned numerous awards and prizes. In 1997, she won the Henry van de Velde Award for young talent. Nedda was proclaimed Belgian Designer of 2007, and in 2008 she was nominated for the second time for the 'Talents du Luxe’. Last week she received the prestigious bi-annual Flemish Cultural Award for Design 2008.
Since 2007, she is also teaching at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp.

La collection comporte 4 pièces de base : une tasse (33 cl), une assiette (25 cm), un bol (15 cm) et une cuiller en céramique. Dunes de neige
Agréables en main, les pièces de la collection sont aussi faciles d’entretien. Clin d’œil à la position de l’Antarctique par rapport à l’axe de la Terre, leur bord est légèrement incliné. Le nom « Sastrugi » renvoie quant à lui au mot russe désignant ces dunes ou ondulations de neige dure formés par les vents.
Nedda a déjà dessiné le Royal Breakfast Set pour le compte de Royal Boch. La société a été fondée en 1841 et est aujourd’hui le seul fabricant de céramiques en Belgique. Royal Boch est un des fournisseurs officiels de la station « Princess Elisabeth » et apporte un soutien actif à l'International Polar Foundation. Un coffret cadeau incluant une tasse, une assiette, un bol et une cuiller en céramique coûtent 58 euros. La station « Princess Elisabeth »
La station de recherche scientifique « Princess Elisabeth » a été construite par l’International Polar Foundation sur un rocher dans l’Est de l’Antarctique.
Cette base belge du pôle sud accueille, avec ses facilités ultra-modernes, 25 scientifiques qui concentreront leurs recherches sur les changements climatiques. C’est la seule base polaire qui ne produit pas de CO2 et fonctionne uniquement à partir d’énergies renouvelables.
Nedda a fait une sélection très élaborée d’objets d’intérieur fonctionnels et esthétiques tels que tables, chaises, lits, matelas, draps de lit, ustensiles de cuisine et de table. La qualité, la longévité et le respect de l’homme et de l’environnement lors du processus de production étaient des critères très importants dans le choix de ces objets et matériaux.

Nedda Wins Prestigious Flanders Culture Award for Design 2008
Brussels (Belgium) - 6th February 2008 • The bi-annual Award of the Flemish Community for Design in 2008 went to Nedda El-Asmar. Bert Anciaux, Flemish Minister of Culture, Youth, Sports and Brussels, attended the award ceremony. Achilles Associates and Patrick Hoet were the two other nominees in the 'Design' category.
In the presence of hundreds of guests, individuals and organizations from different disciplines were officially awarded for their outstanding contribution to cultural life in Flanders in 2008. There were 13 categories in total. Each prize included 12,500 Euros. The prize for General Cultural Merit, however, included 20,000 Euros. It was awarded to Sigiswald Kuijken for his musical career. All award winners also received a bronze statue by sculptor Johan Tahon.
The jury commented: "Nedda accompanies its prototypes faultlessly to the finished product. By doing this she safeguards the balance between creative freedom and industrial requirements. Her seemingly simple designs combine classic elegance with a contemporary touch".
